Treasure from the past,
I can’t wait to use this at Christmas time. Our family had one when I was a kid and it was the best treat in the world.

|crappy product!!,
Although this ice cream maker seems to be top-of-the-line, it breaks after only a few uses. Although the box boasts a “5 Year Warranty!” the cheap, POS motor has a 1 year warranty. So when my husband bought this for me for Christmas 2009, the warranty started ticking then. I think we made ice cream once or twice Summer 2010, and then when I went to use it this summer (2011), it made a horrible screeching noise. I called customer service for a replacement (based on the stated 5 year warranty), and was told sorry, but I could take 15% off a new $100 motor today! Screw you. It’s frustrating to think that I could have spent half as much for a cheap ice cream maker that would either still be working, or I wouldn’t care about when it broke. Too bad, this is otherwise a seemingly-nice ice cream maker – the other parts work well. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!

|China manufacturing,
We have used these ice cream makers for many years for our church Ice Cream Social. We have the same problems, but have been learning to cope with them. We are now rebuilding them ourselves. The problem has been that they started manufacturing the motors in China. I guess they haven’t given the Chinese lessons on what these things actually do. The earliest ones we rebuilt were assembled in the US and they were marked that way. The new ones seem to be completely manufactured over there. We have had them freeze up on us and just stall out completly. When I took them apart, I noticed that some of them had little grease or the grease was just in the wrong place and wasn’t doing anything. Some of them had the gears just frozen fast in the pivot. The gear pivots in a hole that acts as a bearing. There seems to be no bearing sleeve, the hole in the housing acts as the bearing. We have been working the grease down in where it will actually do something. some of them had no grease at all.
The motor carbon brush springs are sort of like a safety pin design, only a safety pin is much heavier. The spring material is so extremely thin that it will not take much stress. If you should happen to drip a little bit of the salt brine down the motor (which is very easy to do) your spring will be gone the next time you get out the freezer. Then the brushes will arc and the motor will soon be shot. This was once a great product. Sad to see what has happened to them. You can’t even seem to get replacement motors anymore, you have to buy the whole motor/gear assembly.
